Statement on the European Union’s Sanctions against Four persons and Two Entities related to the illegal Military Coup Council

13 December 2023

1.  The Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw welcomes the European Union’s sanctions against four persons and two entities related to the illegal military coup council imposed on 11 December 2023. The sanctions include two members of illegal military coup council, one Union Minister under illegal council, one commander who is responsible for aerial attacks in Kareni State and two entities which support weapons and other equipment to illegal military council.

2.  The illegal military council which is facing a great loss on ground and is losing their territories day by day has increased serious human rights violations against civilians including indiscriminate airstrikes. Therefore, many countries need to increase more sanctions. At the same time, the countries should create new ways for the effective delivery of the humanitarian assistance to those displaced persons in urgent needs by the violence of the coup council’s armed forces.

3.  The European Council is deeply urged to make effort for the international cooperation in the prevention of sale or transfer of jet fuel to the illegal military council which has frequently committed air-attacks against civilians.

4.  At a time when the people of Myanmar are badly suffering enormous troubles due to conflicts across the country and economic turmoil, the end of illegal military coup and council which has attempted to control the country unlawfully against the will of the people. While the world’s states including the United Nations are working for the end of ongoing conflicts around the world, we urge again to firmly stand with and to support effectively Myanmar for peace and stability.

5.  The democratic forces’ nationwide offensives against illegal military council have possessed many achievements. In this circumstance, we call for member states of the European Union  and world’s states to increase financial and technical support to elected representatives, the National Unity Government, the Ethnic Organizations and democratic forces in order to sustain and strengthen civilian administration for safe and secure efforts in building a federal democratic state.
