The Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) welcomes the recent Congressional hearing held by members of the U.S. House of Representatives concerning online scam operations in Myanmar.
The recommendations urged upon the U.S. Government through this congressional hearing must be implemented as soon as possible. We firmly believe that the U.S. Congress will adopt effective measures to ensure this implementation.
We, Myanmar’ parliamentarians have consistently informed the international community that these online scam operations are significantly harming the security of people and the national interests of many countries worldwide, and we have called for global cooperation. Since these online scam operations are severely impacting the security of the global citizens, we urge the Member Parliaments of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) to continue efforts to ensure their respective governments implement the resolution, “Parliamentary action against transnational organized crime, cybercrime and hybrid threats to democracy and human security,” which was adopted at the 151st IPU Assembly.
Numerous sources indicate that these scam operations within Myanmar are permitted by the terrorist military and their affiliated armed groups who share their interests, and that they are profiting immensely from them. We wish to point out that as long as the military generals remain in power, these operations will continue to survive and grow, and any effort by the terrorist military junta to claim they are trying to cease these scam operations is merely a pretense.
This hearing was organised after the meeting between CRPH Leadership and U.S. Senators and Representatives on 5 and 6 November where we shared and discussed the online scam operations in Myanmar. We appreciate for including our points with serious consideration in this recent hearing. This hearing largely reflected the voice of the people of Myanmar, and our people are hoping more effective actions from the U.S. Government and Congress.
The continued control of the country’s power by the terrorist military junta is not only harming Myanmar and its people, but is also threatening the interests, democracy, rule of law and security of the people and nations worldwide. Therefore, we earnestly and repeatedly urge the international community to work hand-in-hand with us to permanently end the military dictatorship and the involvement of military generals in politics in Myanmar.
The Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH)
