From the time that attempted to illegally seize the state power from the people’s government with weapons power on 1st February 2021 until today, the terrorist coup military council continues commit serious human rights violations against elected parliamentarians.
Such actions are proof of the ill-treatment to imprisoned MPs by the terrorist military council. We, the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw, strongly condemns this inhumane human rights violation and are also so concerned about the MPs who remain in detention. Mandalay Region Chief Minister Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, who was an elected regional MP and was suffering from cancer, died recently because he was not given adequate medical care and decent living in prison.
Like Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, other two regional lawmakers died in prison due to lack of adequate medical care. In addition, a state representative was brutally killed somewhere on the street after being arrested by the military junta’s troops. According to the latest information, 8 MPs from the Union Parliament and 11 MPs from Region/State Parliaments who was forced to flee their homes by the military’s human rights violations and arbitrary arrests lost their lives due to inability to access sufficient medical treatment. Other many elected parliamentarians are still fleeing within the country and to neighboring countries and other foreign countries.
Four members of the Union Parliament – U Yee Mon (aka) U Tin Thit, U Lwin Ko Lat, Daw Zin Ma Aung and Daw Phyu Phyu Thin was revoked their citizenship.
Since the attempted coup by the terrorist military council, 41 national MPs and and 89 regional and state MPs have been arrested and sentenced to long-term prison sentences. According to the families, detained parliamentarians was banned family visits, sent to secret locations and did not receive adequate medical treatment.
According to the information collected by the CRPH Vetting Committee, 17 members of the Union Parliament and 41 members of the Regional and State Parliaments are still in custody.
