Since February 1, 2021, the terrorist military junta has systematically perpetrated arbitrary detentions, forced conscription, fatal torture in interrogation centers and prisons, denial of adequate medical care, destruction of public and private property, arson of civilian homes, and targeted airstrikes on civilian populated areas in an effort to maintain its illegal hold on power.
According to data released by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) on August 25, 2026, over 8,300 civilians have been killed and more than 14,700 individuals remain arbitrarily detained by the military junta.
Due to inhumane torture, severe mistreatment, and deliberate deprivation of adequate medical treatment, four Regional MPs, including Mandalay Region Chief Minister Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, have died while in detention. In June 2022, Mon State MP U Kyaw Myo Min was abducted and brutally executed on a roadside by junta forces.
To date, 17 Union-level MPs and 33 State/Regional MPs—including State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi—remain in junta detention. Furthermore, the latest verified data shows that 17 Union-level MPs and 17 State/Regional MPs living in displacement have passed away due to a lack of sufficient medical treatment, with 5 Union-level MPs and 2 State/Regional MPs passing away within 2026 alone.
Additionally, numerous elected parliamentarians and their family members continue to seek refuge internally, in neighboring countries, and in third countries due to the constant threat of arrest and execution by the military junta.
Despite ongoing junta violence, oppression, and intimidation, our democratically elected representatives from the 2020 General Elections continue to fulfill our parliamentary duties, overseeing local public administration and executing vital humanitarian assistance initiatives. Furthermore, to build an inclusive future Federal Democratic Union, we, elected representatives are collaborating with diverse revolutionary stakeholders through the Steering Council for the Emergence of a Federal Democratic Union (SCEF).
In accordance with the resolution on Myanmar adopted at the 216th Session of the Governing Council of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) held in Geneva in October 2025, we reiterate our call to IPU member parliaments to continue standing with the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) and the 2020 elected parliamentarians. We urge member parliaments to actively support our endeavors and push for the immediate release of all unlawfully detained individuals, including State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, elected representatives, and civilians.
The Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) and the parliamentarians elected in the 2020 General Election are the legitimate representatives of the people of Myanmar, officially recognized as such by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
Therefore, we call upon the international community—including ASEAN and the United Nations—to provide concrete, practical, and effective support to end the daily atrocities and human rights violations committed by the terrorist military junta, and to restore genuine democracy and sustainable peace in Myanmar.
