Statement regarding Resolution of New Zealand Parliament to denounce military junta’s illegitimate election

7 November 2025

1. The Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) and the elected representatives of Myanmar in 2020 election welcome the unanimous adoption of the resolution regarding military junta’s planned elections by the New Zealand Parliament on 5 November 2025. We also thank the mover of the resolution, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rt. Hon. Winston Peters. This action is a good initiative for the global parliamentary community to reject military junta’s elections as these cannot be credible and meaningful elections under this current situation.

2. This resolution demonstrates, once again, the New Zealand Parliament’s democratic solidarity and support for the people of Myanmar. It also reflects the true will of the people of Myanmar and strong principles of democracy and human rights of both parliament and government of New Zealand.

3. Junta’s planned elections are only elections of military generals to legitimize their unlawful military rule and cannot be considered as a path to peace and democratic transition as over 3.5 million are internally displaced and millions have been forced to flee from the country. In addition, the junta has continued its unspeakable violent acts – including deadly airstrikes and largely restricted freedom of speech in multiple ways. At least 99 citizens including famous artists have been arrested for online criticism, social media posts, and even reacting to Facebook posts under their General Election Protection Law.

4. Behind these undemocratic elections, the junta continues to permit and benefit from online scamming operations inside Myanmar targeting the citizens of countries around the world. These criminal operations have destabilized international peace, security and rule of law. Supporting the junta’s elections and accepting the results will further undermine democracy, endangers global security and stability.

5. The very first critical steps for peacebuilding in Myanmar are ending the military junta’s ongoing violence and releasing all unjustly detainees including civilian officials – President U Win Myint and State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. These are also required under the United Nations Security Council resolution (2669) and ASEAN Five-Point Consensus on Myanmar.

6. The global parliament organization – the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) at the recent 151st Assembly held in October 2025 has continued its recognition of the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw as its parliamentary interlocutor. Therefore, we urge all parliaments to take similar or stronger actions as standing in solidarity with us _ the elected parliamentarians in 2020 and the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) as well as our own citizens we represent.
